We choose to participate or choose not to choose and simply follow laid out plans as our default orientation. We adopt technology and mindlessly blind ourselves to the terms and conditions offered

FURTHER DETAILS

In The Property of The Artist series I claim copyright over intangible assets and the ‘thoughts inspired by’ your interaction with works or art.

The work asserts an overt and unjustified data ownership claim over your interaction with it, parodying the claims, data harvesting and complex legalise of the online and increasingly offline worlds. Claims and contracts which no lay person would want, can reasonably understand, but which bind them to one-sided data capture and sharing terms, often circumnavigating privacy laws.

The terms are embedded in a tiny font inside a programming language rendering them deliberately intelligible to those unfamiliar with both the latest copyright laws and coding languages. Picturesque holiday scenes are used to draw the viewers attention away from the fine print and the non-reciprocal transaction that is taking place.

The work seeks to draw attention to the now wholesale and unprecedented claim to on and offline data and the diminishing personal and artists clam to ownership and use. Ownership that will all but be removed (ignored) with the introduction of new proposals which provide public domain-wide royalty free access to AI models and prioritise innovation over privacy and creative ownership.
