Equivalents

FURTHER DETAILS

Pinhole photography provides a different way of seeing. In the subtle unpredictable treatment of light, soft colour transitions, aberrations and abstractions there is the potential for something other. A more expressive, personal and painterly response to light and colour.

Equivalents is a homage to Alfred Stieglitz’s photographs of clouds, which he called Equivalent or Equivalents. The series is part of a larger body of “light studies” where experimental and painterly use of light and historical photographic processes create works that blur the lines between photography and painting.

Inspired by autochromes, the first commercially available colour photographs, equivalents are intended to be viewed in front of a light source to maximise the light, colour and luminescence. Like Stieglitz’s clouds they also change in response to changes in light conditions.
